A Maiden’s Choice

A short poem published in the Hull Weekly Express, Saturday May 9th 1885

Some love the fair Aurora,
When with rosy hand she fills
The nectar-cups of Flora,
With the dew of Heaven’s rills
But give to me the splendour
Of the deep blue arc of night;
When moonlight soft and tender,
Bathes the earth in liquid light.

Some praise the vivid brightness
Of the burning mid-day sky:
When clouds of pearly whiteness
O’er the sparkling azure fly.
But give to me the glory
Of the star be-spangled night;
When love’s low whisper’d story
Sounds like music in their light.

Some love the daylight dying
In the gold and purple west;
When th’weary sun is lying
On a crimson ocean’s breast;
But give to me the hour
When the nightingales I hear
Around my lonely bower
With the scent of roses near.
