The writings of George Markham Porter
An amateur poet and author of short stories, this project collates works published in Hull and East Riding of Yorkshire newspapers and periodicals.
George M Porter, 1845-1894, had numerous works published in the Hull Weekly Express and the Hull Critic newspapers in the 1880s.
Items published here are transcribed from faded newspaper cuttings collected and stored in a book
Born 1845 in Goole, in the East Riding of Yorkshire, George Markham Porter was the 3rd son of Robert Benton Porter and Hester Porter (nee Arthur-Worsop).
During the mid-1880’s he authored a number of poems and short stories; newspaper clippings of which were mounted inside a hardback ledger book which has passed down generations, through his son, Valentine Markham Porter, his grandson George William Porter, granddaughter Celia Hood (nee Porter) and to me, Alan Hood.
This website aims to preserve these stories in a digital format so that they can be read and enjoyed without harming the printed copy.

19th Century Writing Illustrated with AI Art

As artificial intelligence comes to the fore around the time of creating this website, making use of this new technology seemed a suitable and interesting way to illustrate the digital version of my Great-Great-Grandfather’s work. Not least because the ability to simply take a trip back to the 19th century to take a photograph remains elusive; but also as a contrast between his world and ours.
I cannot help but wonder what on earth the writer would have thought, as he perhaps wrote by the light of the new and exciting electric lightbulb, should he be told that progression over the next 140 years would move from flicking a switch for instant illumination, to pressing a button for an electric device to produce a painting influenced by his words, in mere seconds.
